End-to-end encrypted communication

The sending of information and documents by electronic means, especially by e-mail, is subject to risks. In particular, it cannot be ruled out that third parties may gain access to the data, take note of it and modify it, or that data may be falsified, incomplete, delayed or not received by the recipient at all. In addition, despite the use of security systems, sent electronic messages may contain viruses and other components that may disrupt or damage another computer system.

The law firm SNP Schlawien Partnerschaft mbB Rechtsanwälte Steuerberater sends e-mails by default with transport encryption (SSL/TLS encryption). To receive such e-mails, the recipient must also have SSL/TLS encryption activated. Transport encryption is basically a point-to-point encryption: The content is protected in encrypted form during transmission between the sender and his e-mail provider, between two e-mail providers among themselves and between e-mail provider and recipient (as in the analogous world of an envelope). However, the e-mail is decrypted at the e-mail provider, e.g. to check the e-mail for spam, viruses or metadata or for categorization. The e-mails are therefore protected on the Internet, but are available on the client computers and e-mail servers in unencrypted form.

In order to prevent access to the content of the e-mail on client computers and e-mail servers, the law firm SNP Schlawien Partnerschaft mbB Rechtsanwälte Steuerberater offers an end-to-end encryption (S/MIME). With end-to-end encryption, the individual paths in the transmission channel are not encrypted as with transport encryption, but each e-mail is encrypted from beginning to end. Only the sender and recipient can read the contents of the e-mail if they have the necessary key. The recipient must also use S/MIME encryption. It should be noted, however, that security gaps have also become known in end-to-end encryption and that such e-mails can only be read to a very limited extent on mobile devices.
